About The Director

Meet the Director, Lauren Shell:

Lauren is a multidisciplinary dancer, educator, and lifelong tap enthusiast.

She began taking ballet classes at a young age before expanding her dance training to include tap (among various other styles) at the age of 13, training under Kelly Hill for approximately 6 years. After continuing to take tap classes throughout undergraduate studies, Lauren began teaching and choreographing for G-Force Dance Company in Fort Myers, Florida for just over 5 years.

Lauren continues to pursue her passion for tap dance, education, and performing – she was an active member of the Seminole Tap Troupe at Florida State University from 2021-2024 while attending graduate school, regularly attends tap dance classes and festivals, has completed the Level 1 and Level 2 iTap Teacher Certificate Programs (in 2020 and 2023, respectively) by renowned tap dancer, Hillary-Marie, and currently teaches for Studio 88 Dance Productions, as well as Studio B Dance Company.

Beyond the studio, Lauren has a master’s degree from Florida State University in educational psychology: learning and cognition, specializing in motivation and emotion in dancers, with research interests revolving around athlete burnout.

She is beyond excited to be involved in the creation of a tap dance community where artists in the Tallahassee, FL area can collaborate, grow, and perform together.

Expectations & Policies

Communication

Tallahassee Rhythm Collective uses the cell phone app, “BAND” for communication purposes. Please be sure to download this app and turn notifications for the app on.

Band etiquette –

Performances

Collective Members are expected to attend performance opportunities if they are available. Members are not required to participate in every show, but we encourage you to try as many as you can!

Placement

Placement within a specific piece of choreography, performances, formation, featured roles, etc. is the sole decision of the choreographer. If a parent or dancer requests or demands specific placement the dancer may be removed from that piece of choreography.

Representation

The goal of the company is to help shape artists and dancers, while growing the program. With that said, Tallahassee Rhythm Collective acts as a pre-professional dance company, where the dancers will be treated like professionals. Inside and outside the studio, dancers are respected as individuals. It is expected that Collective members respect their peers, faculty, and any guest or master faculty.

We do not tolerate discrimination, whether on the basis of body type, disability or individual difference, gender identity or sexual preference, race or ethnic background, religion, or any other variable.

Members of the company are additionally expected to show respect for our home base, Studio B Dance Company, their faculty, and every venue at which we are invited to perform.

The Collective maintains a fun environment and our mission is to keep it as friendly and open as possible while still learning. Consequences of behavior detrimental to the Collective or lack of adherence to these rules, whether in representation of brand, rehearsal commitments, and/or attitude, may result in the dancer in question potentially being removed from a dance or performance, or in said dancer’s dismissal from the company, at the sole discretion of the Company Director.

Brand

As pre-professional dancers, our behavior outside the studio is just as important as it is inside the studio. Your actions represent yourself as an artist and your actions represent the Collective – fellow dancers, past members, the Director, and anyone else affiliated with the company. When you are wearing Collective apparel in public settings, you are representing the brand. Your behavior, related but also unrelated to the Collective, is just as important. This includes your presence on social media accounts. Future employers look at social media now to learn about you. Always represent yourself as if your dream job depends on it! Bottom line, character counts.

Punctuality

Please plan to arrive and be ready to dance on time. Notify the Director if you are running late or cannot make rehearsal.

Sharing

The Collective is all about sharing. However, please respect the company and the Director by asking permission first before sharing content with others. Please do not re-teach Company material to non company members without asking permission first.

Costumes

We will typically wear a Tallahassee Rhythm Collective t-shirt and black shorts or leggings for performances, unless otherwise discussed, in order to keep costs at a minimum.
